On Thursday, February 26, players on PUC’s men’s and women’s basketball teams were awarded honors in the California Pacific Conference of the National Intercollegiate Athletics Association (NAIA). In addition to the conference honors, Jordan Monteith, men’s basketball forward, was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete programs recognize excellence in the classroom by NAIA-member student athletes who are juniors or above in academic standing with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Students must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer. The awards are given annually to outstanding student athletes in the various sports in which the program is active, and their respective teams are eligible for NAIA postseason competition. Monteith, a senior forward who will graduate with his bachelor’s degree in business administration this summer, was also recognized as the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week (January 12-18). Senior night for the Pioneers men’s basketball program meant saying goodbye to six players who played a key role in helping the team achieve the success they reached this season. They will be losing Austin Coetzee, Devon Marshall, Jordan Monteith, Keith Hicks, Gurpreet Sangha, Taureaus Maxwell, and Jordan Greenwell. The Pioneers, having already locked in a playoff spot, looked to improve their record against the UC Merced Bobcats. The Pioneers came out of the gate running and were able to make the seniors’ last home game memorable with an 85-58 senior night win. This win improves their record to 11-16 and their conference record to 6-4. Three seniors scored in double figures: Jordan Greenwell had 16 points and seven rebounds, Jordan Monteith added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Gurpreet Sangha tallied 12 points and eight rebounds. Taureaus Maxwell added 4 points and Devon Marshall had six points and six rebounds. Grammy-award-winning a cappella group Take 6 performed at the Pacific Union College Church on February 15 at 6 p.m. President Heather J. Knight introduced the musicians, mentioning the group’s beginnings at Oakwood University and their longtime ties to Adventism. Knight also included a brief overview of the group’s greatest moments; the sextet has won 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, a Soul Train Award, and performed for several U.S. presidents, including current president Barack Obama. The concert was well attended by an audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members. During the performance, Take 6 frequently encouraged “call and response” from the audience, and invited the audience members to clap, snap, and “make a joyful noise” in any way that felt right. After the concert, fans had the opportunity to meet the performers and get copies of their latest CD, One, signed. Pacific Union College has been named a “Healthiest Company” by the North Bay Business Journal for the third time. The college received the award for its commitment to promoting wellness and an active lifestyle among its employees. PUC first received the “Healthiest Company” award in 2012, and continues to encourage employees to focus on health and happiness while expanding wellness program opportunities. The Business Journal gathered nominations over months, finally settling on 19 companies and organizations that were honored at the Journal’s 2014 Health Care Conference and in a special report in the weekly publication. The companies selected for the award ranged from construction, education, banking, and technology; the healthiest companies were selected after a nomination and company survey process. The conference and special issue of the Journal drew attention to the outstanding efforts of businesses across the North Bay in the critical movement toward wellness, according to the Journal. The number of PUC’s employees involved in the college’s wellness program raised 6% from 2013, for a total of 96%. The wellness program provides educational classes and a yearly health assessment. The Pacific Union College Pioneers women’s volleyball team ended their season at the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) California Pacific Conference Volleyball Tournament in Riverside, Calif. The Lady Pioneers lost to Menlo College on October 13; Menlo went on to beat UC Merced for the Cal Pac Championship on October 15. At the Championship Awards Banquet, Pioneer players were honored with postseason honors. PUC women’s volleyball ended their season 15-12 overall and 5-6 in Cal Pac play. They entered the Championships as the three seed before falling to Menlo College in the first round. “We are a young team, and a young team with a lot of talent,” shared head coach Brittany Brown. “I am looking forward to building off the success of this program going into next year.” At the Cal Pac Championship Awards Banquet, Lady Pioneer Viridiana Gallardo, a senior, was recognized the Cal Pac Libero of the Year and named to the All Conference First Team. Early Sunday morning, August 24, a large earthquake measuring an estimated 6.0 struck southern Napa County at 3:20 a.m. While Angwin residents definitively felt the tremors, very little damage has been reported in the community, which is approximately 30 miles from the epicenter. No damages or injures were reported at Pacific Union College. The campus experienced a brief power outage, but all critical services were functioning following the earthquake. The college, College Market, Chevron station, and other Angwin Plaza businesses were open as usual on Monday, August 25. Campus officials have inspected all the exteriors of all buildings and structures on the campus property, including Angwin Plaza and the Chevron station. No visible damage has been identified. Individual interior building inspections will continue, and if any structural damage is found during these inspections the college will assess the damage and respond appropriately with necessary repairs. As of Monday, August 25, the college had received laboratory reports on the college water supply, and the water was declared safe to drink. All water tanks appear safe and have no signs of structural damage. The intense shaking stirred up sediment in the lines. This is completely normal given the magnitude of the quake....

During the end of July and beginning of August, Pacific Union College representatives travel to Seventh-day Adventist Camp Meetings in northern and central California along with Adventists from around the state to fellowship, meet alumni and friends, and to share what is happening at the college. Additionally, the college hosts the Korean West Coast Camp Meeting on its Angwin, Calif., campus. During the Soquel Camp Meeting, the Central California Conference’s yearly gathering near Santa Cruz, Calif., a group of PUC students are leading the praise music in the Youth Tent each morning and evening, while representatives at the PUC booth are answering questions and sharing information about the college. During the final Sabbath of Camp Meeting, July 26, the Alumni Relations team will host a Sabbath luncheon in the Earliteen Tent following the worship service. Alumni Relations Director Mark Ishikawa will be speaking at the Youth Tent July 24-26. During Redwood Camp Meeting, July 24 to August 2, PUC will be travelling to the beautiful forest of Humboldt County to worship with members of the Northern California Conference. Teresa Reeve, associate professor of New Testament at Andrews University, has been appointed as the new associate dean of the Andrews University Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, Mich. Reeve, who graduated from Pacific Union College in 1982 with a bachelor’s in education, is the first woman to serve as associate dean. “Reeve’s appointment is especially significant because she is the first female associate dean in seminary history,” said Jiří Moskala, seminary dean, in a statement released by Andrews University. “This is an historical nomination, and I am glad I can play a part in it. With this appointment comes unique diversity in our seminary.” After graduating from PUC, Reeve taught in Adventist and Montessori schools for ten years and earned an M.A. in educational and developmental psychology from Andrews. She received her M.Div. and Ph.D. at Andrews, where she teaches in the New Testament department. An author of numerous articles, Reeve has served on a number of Seventh-day Adventist Church and seminary committees, including the Biblical Research Institute Committee, the Theology of Ordination Study Committee and the Seminary Deans’ Council.
