Longo Lecture Speaker Selected

The 2000 Longo Lecture Series will feature Phillip E. Johnson, professor of law at the University of California, Berekely. Dr. Johnson, called "our age's clearest thinker on evolution" and the "principal lay critic of Darwinism," is the author of numerous best selling books, essays, and articles. One of his more famous works, Darwin on Trial, examines the scientific evidence for and against Darwinistic evolution, arguing that the hotly debated theory is based more on faith than on evidence. The Longo Lecture, made possible by a generous grant from by Dr. Lawrence D. Longo, is scheduled for February 2000....

Student Association Holds Auction

As part of their campaign to beautify the campus, the Student Association held a student auction at the annual Spring Festival on May 4. More than 40 local businesses donated certificates, services, and gifts to be sold to the highest bidder. Several students were able to purchase fine dining opportunities at a lower cost, but the bargain of the night was a $270-valued teeth-whitening procedure, donated by Dr. Darleene Hemmerlin, sold for only $150. The event raised more than $2000. The proceeds will go toward picnic tables to be placed outside the Campus Center, a popular hangout for the students....

Nursing Students Bring the Health Fair to St. Helena High School

On Friday, January 26, over 400 students at St. Helena High School went to see the nurse. The nurse that day, however, was actually more than 50 nursing students from Pacific Union College. Armed with a barrage of information on a variety of health topics, they had come to present a health fair, an informative and educational exhibition on the many facets of personal health. The fair was organized by 28 baccalaureate nursing students as a project for the class "Health Education, Promotion, and Self Care" in PUC's nursing program. Sharon Millard, associate professor of nursing, says that it is an important assignment for the students, as well as a community service. "We are trying to get our students into a mode of thinking that involves community service and working with community resources to educate the youth in our valley," she says. The nurses were assisted by more than two dozen volunteer students studying at PUC for an associate's degree in nursing. They were joined by other Napa Valley health programs. Members of PUC's behavioral science, biology, and physical education departments also lent their expertise to the project. PUC Seniors Score High on National Test

Pacific Union College senior business administration majors recently tested in the 96 percentile for the 1998-99 Major Field Achievement Test (MFAT), placing the department among the top ten schools tested. This indicates the PUC business department that 96 percent of the 244 schools tested during this exam period ranked below the PUC business department. The MFAT is an end-of-curriculum assessment test taken by college and university seniors all over the United States. It examines the graduate's knowledge in their field of study, and compares them to students at other institutions. The test results continues to demonstrate the high quality of graduates and academic programs at PUC. The college's recent institutional average on the MFAT was above the 90th percentile in a number of other areas as well, including biology, computer science, history, literature, math, and psychology....

Psychology Workshop to be Held at PUC

Pacific Union College, in cooperation with the Institute for Behavioral Healthcare, will be offering a one-day clinical workshop entitled, "Addiction and Mental Health: Introduction to Drug Treatment for Mental Health Professionals." The session will be held at PUC's Paulin Hall on September 17, 1999. Led by S. Alex Stalcup, M.D., a professional lecturer on drug abuse treatment and relapse prevention, the workshop will focus on the application of the principles of community-based drug treatment for mental health clients. Dr. Stalcup provides participants with a practical, systematic approach to individualized drug treatment. The session has specially been designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals, with seven CE/CME credit hours being awarded to those attending....
