Duties
Pacific Union College’s (PUC) forest lands represent an untapped resource for the college that can contribute to the college’s overall mission and build upon existing relationship with the local community. The forest manager will be responsible for ushering in a new era where the forest actively supports a number of different college departments.
Position is responsible for overseeing all forest-related activities, including but not limited to: forest management, academics, student life, and fundraising.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Forestry: implements PUC Forest Management Plan, oversees forest recreation and public use, plans and oversees forest harvest operations and reforestation, applies for State and Federal land management grants, plans and guides volunteer forest maintenance activities, maintains spatial and non-spatial forest data records, maintains forest roads and trails (coordinates with Land Management and Facilities Director in execution of these duties).
- Academics: contributes to forest-related student education and research, oversees student internship and volunteer activity in the forest, teaches classes as needed (works primarily with Biology Department in execution of these duties, as well as other departments as needed).
- Student Life: plans and oversees student recreational activities in the forest (coordinates with Student Life department in execution of these duties).
- Advancement: helps generate capital for the “PUC Forest Fund,” oversees “Friends of the Forest” program, provides forest-related donor & alumni outreach, supports Advancement as needed (works with Chief Advancement Officer in execution of these duties), and collaborates with community stakeholders.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises contractors, interns, volunteers, and students working in the PUC Forest.
Competencies
- Knowledge of principles and technology of forestry and forest management
- Ability to coordinate among & prioritize tasks from multiple departments
- Function as a “self starter” who can work independently
- Ability to work on a team and build understanding, acceptance, and support for PUC Forest activities.
- Ability to work among college students in a variety of capacities
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems in documenting forest management activity
Desirable Qualifications
Qualifications
- Basic Degree in Forestry
- Bachelor’s degree in related subject
- Master’s or PhD degree desirable
Language Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Position will be responsible for working among a variety of individuals including department directors, students, faculty, staff, and community members, so strong interpersonal communication skills will be required.

Suite of Esri ArcGIS Products, competent in Microsoft Office Suite, ability to learn new computer applications as required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
None required, but ideal candidate will work towards obtaining California Registered Professional Forester Status.
Other Skills and Abilities
Ability to motivate and direct staff members and volunteers. Communication, leadership, and time management skills are essential. Travel and weekend responsibilities may be required.

Physical Demands
Must be able to walk, hike, and climb in the dense forest conditions and on steep hillsides of the forest. Must be able to drive trucks and ATV’s on narrow forest roads.
Work Environment
Must be able to work long hours in the forest under both wet and cold conditions, and office and classroom working conditions.
