Statement of Values

The BSN curriculum originates out of a philosophy describing faculty beliefs about five fundamental concepts that are in harmony with the mission and philosophy of Pacific Union College. These five fundamental concepts are Seventh–Day Adventist (SDA) Christian Context, Humanity, Health, Teaching and Learning, and Nursing. The values expressed through these concepts are integrated in the final paragraph of the nursing program philosophy, which states, Finally, we believe that nurses are professionals who are committed to caring for individuals within the larger community and who use clinical judgment and teamwork and collaboration in the provision of that care. Nurses maintain evidence-based practice and engage in teaching and learning activities as a part of their professional role.

This culminating statement leads to the end of program student learning outcomes (EPSLOs), which describe our expectations for PUC nursing graduates in each of the six outcome areas: professionalism, caring, clinical judgement, evidence-based practice, teaching and learning, and teamwork and collaboration

  • Provide holistic, safe, quality, compassionate, evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care to diverse patients, populations, and communities across the lifespan in various healthcare settings. (EBP/Professionalism/Caring)
  • Engage in clinical judgment to make nursing decisions for the patient, population, and care community.   (Clinical Judgement/Teaching & Learning)
  • Analyze quality improvement processes and outcome measures to improve patient care outcomes by applying evidence to clinical practice.  (EBP, Teaching & Learning)
  • Facilitate teamwork and collaboration using leadership and management principles to guide the healthcare delivery system. (Teamwork & Collaboration/Professionalism)
  • Employ information management systems and patient care technology to communicate, gather evidence, mitigate error, and support clinical judgment.  (Clinical Judgment/EBP)
  • Exemplify Christian values, leadership, legal, and ethical principles to guide professional practice as a Registered Nurse. (Caring/Professionalism)
